At LABI College, Café y Comunidad is more than just an event—it's a chance to build meaningful relationships over a cup of coffee. Designed as a casual and inviting series, it welcomes students and prospective students to explore the intersection of faith, community, and education in a relaxed setting.
This edition, centered on the theme of “Koinonia”—a deep, transformative fellowship—invites attendees to discover how authentic connections can shape their lives. Through heartfelt stories, practical guidance, and biblical insights, Café y Comunidad inspires participants to embrace new seasons of life with faith and purpose.
Definition of Koinonia:
Koinonia is a Greek word from the New Testament that means fellowship, partnership, and community. It represents deep, spiritual connections among individuals united by faith in Christ.
More than casual friendships, koinonia fosters trust, shared purpose, and mutual support, encouraging growth and unity. It’s about building authentic relationships rooted in love and faith, transforming lives through meaningful connections.

Our guest speakers
Krystal Baca-Matthews is an LABI College alumna with a legacy of ministry and a passion for empowering students. After earning her A.A. in Bible and Ministry at LABI (2006) and completing her B.A. and M.A. in Leadership Studies at Vanguard University, she served as a Youth Pastor and later became LABI’s first female Lead Campus Pastor in 2015.
In 2023, Krystal returned to LABI as Vice President of Spiritual Formation/Student Life and Campus Pastor, dedicated to helping students embrace their calling. She resides in Covina, CA, with her husband Bo and their dog Chicka.
Emiliany Vargas is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT 140893) and Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC 15135). She received a Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy and Master of Arts in Leadership from Azusa Pacific University. Emiliany has experience working in university, school-based, and community mental health settings. She shares a dedicated interest in promoting holistic wellness and belonging for students, multicultural issues, and uses an individual’s cultural and faith background to inform treatment. Currently, she serves students at the Office of Accessibility and Disability Resources at Azusa Pacific University. Emiliany aims to provide students with the quality services they deserve.
